Two figures add together, and quotes usually show one
The two figures
Compulsory, set by the insurer, and voluntary, chosen by you to lower the premium. A claim costs the sum of both.
Why it matters
A three-hundred-pound voluntary excess plus a two-hundred compulsory one means no claim under five hundred is worth making.
Where to check
The policy schedule rather than the quote. The compulsory figure is always stated there and is not always shown when comparing.
