One measurement decides whether the whole idea is possible

People spend months on plans before discovering the roof is too shallow. The ridge-to-joist height takes two minutes to measure and settles it.

The measurement

Floor joist to ridge, minimum about two point two metres for most conversions. Below that, the roof must be raised, which changes the project entirely.

The second check

Floor area above one point five metres head height. That is the usable space, and it is always much less than the loft footprint.

The one people forget

Where the stairs go. A conversion needs a compliant staircase and it comes out of the room below, which is often the reason a scheme fails.
