Last month's piece named somebody who had explicitly asked to be anonymous. That was my error, it caused them real difficulty, and there is no version of it that is defensible.

An apology

I published a name I had been asked not to publish

Last month's piece named somebody who had explicitly asked to be anonymous. That was my error, it caused them real difficulty, and there is no version of it that is defensible.

What happened

They asked for anonymity in an email in June. I had the email, I had noted it, and I published the name anyway in a late edit.

What I have done

Removed the name, apologised to them directly, and offered to withdraw the whole piece, which they declined.

What changes

Anonymity requests now go in a separate file that is checked against every piece before publication. That should have existed already.

If you have ever asked me for anonymity, please check I have it recorded. I would rather be asked twice.
