Collaboration

Two writers, one subject, and neither edited the other's half

We have argued about this for two years. Rather than one of us being right, both accounts are published together and the disagreements are left standing.

How it works

We each wrote four thousand words on the same question without seeing the other's draft. Both are published unedited and in full.

Where we agree

On almost all of the facts, which was itself a surprise. The disagreement is entirely about what those facts mean.

Where we do not

On whether the decline was inevitable. That is set out in a short joint note at the end, which we did write together.

Neither of us is paid by the other and neither publication carries advertising.
