Guide

Every three to five minutes, all day, which is the actual rhythm

Beginners sharpen at the start and wonder why it stops cutting. A scythe is honed constantly, and the pauses are part of the work rather than an interruption.

The rhythm

Twenty strokes with the stone every three to five minutes of mowing. It takes fifteen seconds and it is what makes the whole thing effortless.

Peening

Every eight to ten hours the edge is hammered thin again on an anvil. Honing maintains an edge; peening recreates it and cannot be skipped.

What good feels like

The blade should hiss rather than thud. If you are pushing, it is blunt, and pushing harder is the wrong response every time.
