Guide

Food contamination is what sends recycling to landfill

Sorting is done by machine and by hand and copes with most mistakes. Food and liquid contaminate the paper stream and can send whole batches to incineration.

The one rule

Empty and dry. A rinsed jar with a trace of sauce is fine; a half-full one is not, and neither is a greasy pizza box.

Things people get wrong

Lids on bottles are fine and preferred here. Black plastic and crisp packets are not recyclable in this scheme however they look.

When unsure

Put it in the general waste. One wrong item in the recycling causes more harm than one recyclable item in the rubbish.
