Skills guide

Set the map to the ground and everything becomes simple

Most navigation errors come from reading a map held the wrong way round. Turning the paper so it matches the ground fixes about half of all mistakes.

Setting the map

Turn the map until the features on it line up with what you can see. North is now wherever it happens to be, and that is fine.

Thumbing

Keep your thumb on where you are and move it as you go. It sounds trivial and it is the single habit that stops people getting lost.

Distance by time

At four kilometres an hour you cover a hundred metres every ninety seconds. Counting time beats counting paces on any real ground.
