Guide

A dirty feeder does more harm than no feeder at all

Feeders concentrate birds and concentrate disease with them. Trichomonosis has caused serious declines and is spread almost entirely at unwashed feeders.

How often

Every fortnight at minimum, weekly in warm weather. Hot soapy water, rinsed, and dried completely before refilling.

Moving it

Move the feeder every few weeks. Droppings accumulate underneath and the ground below becomes the main infection route.

When to stop

If you see a bird that is lethargic, fluffed up, and struggling to swallow, take the feeders down for a fortnight and clean everything.
