Buying guide

Feet are a size larger by late afternoon, and larger again on a hill

Boots fitted in a morning fit badly by lunchtime on a walk. Trying them late in the day, in the socks you will wear, is the whole of the technique.

When to try them

Late afternoon, in walking socks. Feet swell through the day and considerably more on a long descent.

The heel test

Kick the toe against the floor, lace firmly, and walk down a slope. If the heel lifts more than a few millimetres, they are wrong whatever the length.

The toe test

You should be able to just touch the front with your toe when the boot is unlaced and pushed forward. A full thumb's width is the usual guidance.
