Reflection

Publishing corrections has cost nothing and gained a great deal

The fear is that visible corrections undermine trust. Five years of doing it suggests the opposite: subscriptions rose after every one of the eleven.

What was expected

That admitting error would cost readers. That was the reason for the fear and it turned out to be simply wrong.

What happened

Subscriptions rose in the week following ten of the eleven corrections. The eleventh was in August and nothing happens in August.

The likely reason

A publication that corrects itself is one whose uncorrected pieces mean something. That is the whole mechanism and it seems obvious afterwards.

Errors reported by readers are corrected within a week and credited unless you ask otherwise.
