Reserve management

Removing trees, because this is heathland and trees are the problem

Every winter somebody complains that a nature reserve is felling trees. On heathland, scrub encroachment is the single greatest threat to the habitat.

Why

Birch and pine colonise heathland and shade out heather within about fifteen years. Left alone, this becomes woodland and the reason for the reserve disappears.

What is being removed

Self-seeded birch and pine from about four hectares. No mature oak, no hedgerow, and nothing outside the marked compartments.

What returns

Heather within three years and the specialist invertebrates within about five. There are photographs from the 2018 compartment on the page.
