Deposits must be protected in a scheme within thirty days. A great many are not, and the tenant is entitled to compensation when that happens.

How to check

Search each of the three schemes with your postcode and the deposit amount. It takes about two minutes and needs nothing from your landlord.

If it is not protected

You may be entitled to between one and three times the deposit. That is a court claim rather than a complaint and it usually succeeds.

At the end of the tenancy

Disputes go free to the scheme's adjudicator rather than to court. Photographs at move-in are what decide almost all of them.
