Explainer

One field on a payslip is worth checking every April

The tax code is a short string that determines everything else and is wrong surprisingly often, usually after changing job or having two at once.

The tax code

A number and a letter. The number is roughly a tenth of your tax-free allowance. If it starts with BR or D0, all your income is being taxed.

Year to date

Cumulative figures for the tax year. Useful because a single month tells you very little and an error shows up here first.

Deductions

Everything other than tax and national insurance should be something you agreed to. Anything unfamiliar is worth one question.
