A finding

An enumerator's error in 1841 that has misled every subsequent account

Two households were recorded as one, which made the house look twice as populous as it was. Every account since 1900 has repeated it, including two of mine.

The error

The enumerator ran two households together at the page break. The rate book and the tithe apportionment both show them separately.

Why it persisted

Because the census is treated as primary and rarely checked against anything. It is a document made by a person in a hurry.

What it changes

The population figures for the whole township by about four percent, and two of my own pieces, which are corrected.
