A useful starting point, with the important parts named.

It is the best-written book on this subject and it has no notes, no bibliography, and several claims I cannot find anywhere else. Both things are true at once.

Book note

Beautifully written, and I cannot tell which parts are true

It is the best-written book on this subject and it has no notes, no bibliography, and several claims I cannot find anywhere else. Both things are true at once.

What is good

The prose, which is genuinely exceptional, and the structure, which makes a complicated century legible for the first time.

The problem

No sources. Three claims I tried to verify are unattested anywhere I can find, and one contradicts a document I have read.

What I would say

Read it for pleasure and do not cite it. That is an uncomfortable recommendation and it is the honest one.
