### Unmarried partners are not recognised, however long the relationship

The rules that apply without a will do not mention unmarried partners at all. Thirty years together counts for nothing in that framework.

#### Without a will

A fixed statutory order applies: spouse, then children, then parents, then siblings. Unmarried partners appear nowhere in it.

#### What that means

A long-term partner may have to make a court claim to receive anything, against the people who inherited automatically.

#### The fix

A will. A straightforward one costs between a hundred and two hundred pounds and takes about an hour.
