### Start from nothing and advance, never the other way round

People set a plane by eye, take a thick shaving, and back it off. Starting from no cut and advancing is slower once and correct every time afterwards.

#### Setting the depth

Retract the blade until it does not cut at all. Advance in tiny increments, testing on the wood, until a shaving just appears.

#### Lateral adjustment

Sight down the sole from the front. The blade should show as an even hairline. Correct with the lever before touching the depth again.

#### What a good shaving looks like

Translucent, full width, and continuous. If it is thick or breaks up, back off rather than pushing harder.
