Explainer

### Two numbers on the whole bill actually matter

Bills are designed around the total, which is the least useful figure on them. The unit rate and the standing charge are what you can compare and act on.

#### The unit rate

What you pay per unit used. This is the number to compare between suppliers and it is usually in small print near the back.

#### The standing charge

A daily fee whether or not you use anything. A low unit rate with a high standing charge is worse for a small household.

#### The estimate flag

If the reading is marked estimated, the total is fiction. Send a real reading and the bill is recalculated from it.
