It came out of a barn clearance. Three people who ought to know have offered three incompatible explanations and none of them fits the wear pattern.

#### What it is

Ash, one piece, about nine inches wide, with the blade worn to about half thickness on the left side only over roughly its lower third.

#### The three explanations

Malt turning, lime spreading, and grain trimming. Each explains some of the wear and none explains the asymmetry.

#### What would settle it

Another one. If anybody has seen a second example, or a photograph of one in use, that would probably answer it in a sentence.
