About metrics

### Open rates measure image loading, which is not reading

An open is recorded when a tracking image loads, which many clients do automatically and many block entirely. It measures neither reading nor interest.

#### Why not track

Because the number would change what I write, towards whatever produced it, and the number does not measure the thing I care about.

#### What I do measure

Subscriptions, unsubscribes, and letters received. The third is the only one that has ever told me anything useful.

#### What that means

I genuinely do not know if a piece landed. Writing to say so, even briefly, is more informative than any dashboard would be.
