Safety guide

### Resetting a tripped switch is safe. Opening the cover is not

Modern consumer units are designed to be reset by anybody. Nothing behind the cover is, and the line between the two is worth knowing precisely.

#### Safe to do

Reset a tripped switch, once. Identify which circuit it controls. Turn a circuit off deliberately before changing a light fitting.

#### Not safe

Removing the cover, replacing anything, or resetting the same switch repeatedly. A switch that trips twice is telling you something.

#### What repeated tripping means

A genuine fault somewhere on that circuit. Unplug everything on it and reset once. If it trips with nothing plugged in, stop and call somebody.
