Raw fleece is cheap and the reason is labour. Six hours of washing and picking stands between this and anything you could put on a wheel.

A whole fleece, about two kilos, skirted but otherwise as it came off the sheep. Vegetable matter and lanolin included.

#### What you must do

Wash in three changes of hot water, dry flat, pick out the vegetable matter, and card. About six hours across two days.

#### The alternative

Washed and carded tops are twenty-six pounds a kilo. If your time is worth anything, that is often the better buy.
