The moss-on-the-north-side idea is durable folklore and useless in practice. Two genuine methods are almost as easy and both work.

#### The shadow stick

Mark a stick's shadow tip, wait fifteen minutes, mark again. The line between the two marks runs roughly west to east.

#### The night sky

Find the Plough, follow the two end stars five times their separation, and that is the pole star. Within about a degree of true north.

#### Why not moss

Moss grows where it is damp and shaded, which depends on local shelter far more than aspect. On a north-facing slope it is everywhere.
