Explainer

### Slimy compost means too much green and not enough brown

Almost every failing compost heap has the same problem. Kitchen waste is nitrogen-rich and wet, and it needs roughly twice its volume of dry carbon.

#### The ratio

Roughly two parts brown to one part green by volume. Brown is cardboard, dry leaves, and straw; green is kitchen waste and fresh grass.

#### If it is slimy

Too much green. Add torn cardboard and turn it. It will smell better within a week and be composting properly within three.

#### If nothing happens

Too dry or too small. A heap under about a cubic metre struggles to hold heat, and dry material simply does not decompose.
